Engaging Youth in Local Government

The Council wants DC's youth to play an active role in local government. Students can participate in our internship program, testify at our monthly youth hearings, and, of course, reach out to directly to their Councilmembers. We also welcome and encourage visits to the Wilson Building from school groups or other youth organizations.

COUNCIL YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Council’s Youth Internship Program (CYIP) is a yearlong program that provides high school juniors and seniors (ages 16-19) with an opportunity to gain meaningful professional and educational enrichment through work in Council offices. Interns will benefit from learning more about DC's rich history, and they will learn how to bring about change in their community through participation in the legislative process. Interns will participate in Council meetings and hearings, and they will gain valuable professional experience.  Past Council interns have received various scholarships and awards, and have gone on to attend some of America’s most respected colleges and universities.

YOUTH HEARINGS
The Committee of the Whole convenes a monthly public oversight hearing on youth issues. A great partnership opportunity for the Council and the city's youngest residents, these hearings give young people a chance to share their perspectives and insight regarding a variety of issues impacting their lives, such as: education; public safety; employment; economic development; housing; transportation; and the environment, among others.

Visit the Council calendar for the next youth hearing date (search Committee of the Whole hearings). Residents 21 and younger who would like to testify can sign up online by clicking the "Register to Testify" button to the right, or by contacting the Council's Office of Youth Programs at (202) 724-8161 or youthprograms@dccouncil.us.
