The Office of Youth Programs (OYP) is responsible for developing and managing the Council’s legislative internship program, as well as the Youth Council. The OYP’s mission is to assist the District of Columbia’s youth in utilizing their talents, fulfilling their potential, and building their future through meaningful educational and professional enrichment experiences in the Council of the District of Columbia. These experiences include Council internships, youth hearings, seminars, training, community service, tours, and other activities that enhance youth’s understanding regarding the history of the District of Columbia, the legislative process of the District of Columbia Government, and the Council of the District of Columbia. Other topics to be addressed include professional etiquette, cultural diversity, effective writing and communication skills, and future planning. Each experience is designed to educate, equip, and empower youth with the tools necessary to express their ideas and perspectives regarding issues that impact their lives and communities.
The OYP’s vision is that the District of Columbia’s youth will be empowered, productive citizens and professionals who utilize their talents to create positive change in their communities and broader society.
