Councilmember Evans walking in the 2006 Chinese Lunar New Year Parade Chinatown is in the middle of two booming areas, Shaw and Downtown, site Chinatown - and yes, it is booming as well. One of the most unique and recognizable communities in Ward 2, Councilmember Evans has and continues to work hard with the Chinese community on many issues.

Evans is an ardent supporter of, and major contributor to the Metropolitan Police Department's sub station located in Chinatown, which has been instrumental in aiding to curtail street crime in the area. The MCI Center, the new Washington Convention Center and the Gallery Place Development project are all Evans supported/endorsed projects located in the immediate vicinity of Chinatown.

Revenues generated from these economic development projects have and will continue to aid the businesses in Chinatown.

Evans states, after the attacks on September 11, Chinatown suffered along with the rest of the business community in the District. People are now coming back supporting the restaurants and businesses in the area, foot traffic along the streets of Chinatown is vibrant and people feel safe. With development continuing to move east, Evans' goal is to make sure Chinatown benefits. By working with and supporting the Chinese community, this goal is sure to be achieved.

The Gallery Place project, located south of H Street between 6th & 7th Streets, NW is a mixed use project covering approximately two acres. Office, retail and entertainment center for shopping, entertainment and dining Gallery Place is the neighbor to the MCI Center, Home of the Wizards.

"Although we are seeing a tremendous amount of development on 7th Street, the spill over to H Street is slow," Evans said. "It is important that the traditional Chinese businesses located on H Street reap some of the benefits that are experienced on 7th Street and, I am committed to help the H Street businesses in any way I can. These businesses have been in the area well before the boom. They are important, they are Chinatown."
